Frequently Asked Questions

The WageWorks Health Care Card and IIAS

Why Do I Need to Submit a Receipt after Using My Card?
When receipts are requested, it is usually after a purchase at a non-IIAS (Inventory Information Approval System) certified merchant such as a pharmacy that sells eligible and ineligible OTC items along with prescription medications. You will be able to use the Card at these merchants but most likely you will be asked to submit receipts for verification. (Go to www.wageworks.com/card for more information on Card use and IIAS.)

Can I use my Health Care Card at any merchant?
You can use your Health Care Card at health care merchants, pharmacies and IIAS certified merchants that sell eligible over-the-counter items.

What happens if I use my Health Care Card at a merchant that is not IIAS certified?
If the Card is used at a non-health care merchant that is not IIAS certified, you will be declined and will need to pay with another form of payment. You will need to submit your receipt for reimbursement.

Do I need to submit receipts if I make a purchase at an IIAS certified merchant?
No, you will not need to submit any receipts if the merchant is IIAS certified. Only eligible health care items can be purchased with the card at POS. WageWorks will validate these card transactions. However, you still need to keep the receipts for IRS audit purposes.

How do I know if a merchant is IIAS certified?
You can obtain an updated list of IIAS certified merchants at www.sig-is.org.

What OTHER non-health care merchants are IIAS compliant and why?
The following non-medical merchants are currently IIAS compliant:
    • Walgreens retail establishments
    • Drugstore.com
These merchants have their own inventory system in place and are working to be IIAS certified. WageWorks will allow our Card to be used at these two merchants and will not ask for receipts for verification as they have their own inventory system.

If I have a letter of medical necessity to purchase a non-eligible OTC item will I be able to pay for it with a Health Care card?
The IIAS system will only allow the standard list of eligible OTC items to be purchased via the Card. Any items that are not on this list will require a letter of medical necessity and will need to be paid for with another form of payment and reimbursed via a Pay Me Back Claim Form.

Do I need to submit receipts for pharmacy purchases?
Pharmacies have until 1/1/09 to become IIAS certified. Our Cards can be used at pharmacies, but if they are not IIAS certified we will ask you to submit a receipt to verify the Card transaction. You may go to www.sig-is.org to see which Pharmacies are IIAS certified and will not need a receipt for verification. Please note that online pharmacies must be IIAS certified as of 1/1/08 or have a pharmacy merchant category code in order for the Card to be used.

I heard that some supermarkets, grocery stores, and wholesale clubs accept the Health Care Card even though they are not IIAS certified. How does the Card work in that situation?
Some supermarkets, grocery stores, and wholesale clubs may accept the Card at their pharmacy window but not at the check-out lines as their pharmacy window is coded with the correct merchant category code. In this situation, you may use the Card until 1/1/09. Effective 1/1/2009, they will need to be IIAS certified. Also you may need to submit a receipt to verify Card transactions at these merchants.
