With the recently passed Bay Area Commuter Benefits Ordinance, the Bay Area has taken another step towards addressing environmental protection and economic needs at the same time.
In essence, the ordinance requires businesses with 50 or more employees in the nine counties surrounding San Francisco to offer commuter benefits to their employees. Dan talks more about the specifics of the ordinance in his post.
At WageWorks, we believe this new ordinance is great news for the environment, but also for commuting employees and for employers alike: With a pre-tax transit benefit employees can save on the cost of commuting by paying for their commute with pre-tax dollars (up to a monthly maximum currently set at $130), which can add up to an estimated $625 savings annually on their commuting expenses. And, employers also save by driving down payroll taxes with every employee pre-tax payroll deduction, up to an estimated $120 annually per enrolled employee. Not bad, right?
So, we thought it’s important to let employers and employees in the area know about the great benefits of this new ordinance, hence we created the “Clean and Green” campaign. Watch for our street teams talking to commuters in key transit hubs.
Dan is getting ready for a webinar* on June 3rd to provide more information about the ordinance, so please join us if you can. And to explore the campaign a little further, visit our “Clean and Green” page.
Let us know what you think about “Clean and Green”, and definitely contact us if you have any questions.
