How Does It Work?

You may be eligible for a reimbursement of up to $13,460 for qualified expenses related to the legal adoption of a child, provided the child is placed in your home while you are an employee of the company.

  • You may submit for reimbursement once the child is placed in your home or the adoption is finalized prior to the request
  • Reimbursements must be submitted no later than March 15 of the year following the placement of the child or the finalization of the adoption.
  • The adopted child must be under the age of 18
  • Adoption Assistance reimbursements may be subject to federal income tax. Medicare and Social Security are withheld (please check with your tax advisor)


Examples of eligible expenses include:

  • Private and public agency, placement, legal and court fees, other than legal, and court fees in connection with contested adoptions
  • Temporary foster care fees related to the adoption process
  • Child’s medical expenses required for adoption
  • Required pre-adoption or post-adoption counseling services
  • Required physical examinations of adoptive parents, if not covered by an employee health plan
  • Reasonable travel expenses incurred when receiving a child for placement
  • Home study fees
  • Post-placement follow-up fees

In general, you are eligible for Adoption Assistance if you are a regular employee with at least one year of service and are regularly scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ASSOCIATES ON A LEAVE OF ABSENCE (LOA):  Associates on a company approved LOA are eligible for the Program; however are not eligible to receive a reimbursement until they return to an active status.  Associates should submit their reimbursement claim when they return from leave, provided they return by March 15 of the following calendar year. If a claim has been submitted and processed while on a company approved LOA, the reimbursement will be held by WageWorks and will be released to Payroll when the associate returns from leave, providing they return by the March 15 claim deadline.
