I received a new CharlieCard in the mail, when can I start to use it?
You should not use the CharlieCard until the 1st of the benefit month. MBTA has implemented a policy that if a CharlieCard is used before the first of the benefit month, an additional full month will be charged based on the usage in the prior month. If you do trigger that charge, we will take that value from a future payroll deduction.
Can I punch a hole in my CharlieCard or CharlieTicket to carry it on my keychain?
You should never punch a hole in your CharlieCard or CharlieTicket. CharlieCards contain a computer chip that can be damaged and cause the CharlieCard to perform improperly.
In addition, you should not punch holes in your CharlieTicket—the ticket must be fully inserted into the fare gates and fare boxes and cannot be attached to a key ring. Additionally, a CharlieTicket loaded with a T-Pass may not perform properly when hole-punched.
