New York City Transit is offering an insurance program for your 30-day Unlimited Ride MetroCard when you purchase this card with a WageWorks Visa® Prepaid Commuter Card or a WageWorks MasterCard® Prepaid Commuter Card at a NY MTA MetroCard vending machine. To learn more about this insurance program, visit the NY MTA website -- www.mta.info which has additional information about this program.
How do I get the Reduced Fare MetroCard or Senior/Disabled MetroCard
Reduced Fare MetroCards are only available to riders who are 65 years of age or older or have a disability that qualifies for this program. Please contact the MTA if you think you may qualify for this card and wish to obtain one. If you already have a Reduced Fare MetroCard, you may want to select the WageWorks Commuter Card, a reusable stored value card that can be used to add value to your Reduced Fare MetroCard at MTA MetroCard vending machines and can be used in the MTA NYCT Reduced Fare Mail & Ride program.
What is the $1 New Card Fee?
The MTA charges a $1.00 "new card fee" for each new MetroCard purchased at a MetroCard Vending Machine or station booth, or commuter rail station.
Avoid this fee by keeping and refilling your current MetroCard at any MVM or station booth.
You will be issued a new MetroCard at no charge if your card is expiring or damaged.
The new $1.00 charge will not apply to a MetroCard bought at an out-of-system vendor, reduced fare customers (seniors and customers with disabilities), users of EasyPayXpress cards, transit benefit organization customers who get their MetroCard directly from employers or their benefit providers, and customers who purchase a combination railroad/MetroCard ticket.
Can I return my MetroCard for credit?
There are no credits issued for returned MetroCards. MetroCards have an 18 month expiration date. If you don’t think you will need your MetroCard, hold on to it and use it for a future benefit month.
My MetroCard doesn’t seem to be working. What can I do?
Issues of defective passes should be referred to the MTA - there are envelopes in every station that you can use to return a defective pass. The MTA will determine the value left on the card and send you a new MetroCard with that value.
