Part 1: Ordering, and funding, a WageWorks Visa® Prepaid Commuter Card or a WageWorks MasterCard® Prepaid Commuter Card

The WageWorks Commuter card is a stored-valued card that works like a credit card at transit agency ticket vending machines and ticket windows. In this order path you will be using the Commuter Card as a personal card, to load fares onto your SmartLink Card.

Step 1: Log onto your account on www.wageworks.com

Step 2: Click on the "Place Commuter Order" link. Next, select "Transit". Finally select "PATH Smartlink"

Step 3: Select the “WageWorks Commuter Card” pass product.

Step 4: Select the amount you would like to have on your Commuter Card. To determine this amount, please identify how much you will need to fund your SmartLink Card to support your monthly commute needs.

Step 5: Complete your order.

Please note the Commuter Card funds load on the 20th of the month. The value will not be available until that date.

Part 2: Obtain and register a Smartlink Card


Step 1:
Purchase a SmartLink Card

You may obtain a PATH SmartLink Card:

  • In select PATH stations, through a SmartLink Card dispenser (cash payment only).  Available at Newark, World Trade Center, Journal Square, 33rd Street, Exchange Place, Newport, and Hoboken. Dispensers sell either a 0-Trip or a 10-Trip card, please check the sign on the dispenser. 
  • Online at www.smartlinkcard.com. You have the option of purchasing a 0-Trip or 20-Trip SmartLink Card that will be sent to you via mail in 5-7 business days.
  • By printing and completing the downloadable mail-in request form. If you would like to have the form mailed to you, please send an e-mail request to smartlinkservice@panynj.gov or call 1-800-234-PATH/7284 and select option 1 for SmartLink information.

Step 2: Choose a SmartLink Product

To purchase a SmartLink Card online, click on the tab labeled “Purchase SmartLink Card.”

Please be aware that you can only have two of any given product on the card at one time.  (The card can hold a maximum of 6 products, 3 types and 2 of each type.)  After an online purchase, the card must be tapped in a station within 60 days in order to load the product.  See our SmartLink FAQ for more details or contact the SmartLink Customer Service Center at 1-800-234-7284 or SmartLinkService@PANYNJ.gov.

Step 3: Agree Terms & Conditions

You must agree to the terms and conditions in order to move onto the next step.

Step 4: Quantity and Checkout

You may choose to keep or alter the quantity of products you originally chose in Step 1.

Check the “Same as Shipping Address Option” if this information is the same as your shipping address. Then proceed to input your payment information.

SmartLink Card Registration Tutorial

With registration, a free and optional service for your SmartLinkSM Card, your unused trips and/or days remaining on your unlimited pass will be replaced if your card is ever lost, stolen, or damaged. (See SmartLinkSM Program Terms and Conditions for complete details and information.)

Step 4b: Choose a security question and create the corresponding answer

Step 5: Confirm your registration.

Wait! You also have the option of creating a Web Account, where you can avoid lines at in-station Ticket Vending Machines by purchasing products online!

The WageWorks Commuter Prepaid MasterCard is issued by The Bancorp Bank, member FDIC, pursuant to license by MasterCard International Incorporated. Card can be used at qualified locations everywhere Debit MasterCard is accepted. Card cannot be used cash access or at ATMs.

The WageWorks Visa Prepaid Commuter Card is issued by The Bancorp Bank, member FDIC, pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. Inc. Card can be used at qualified locations wherever Visa debit cards are accepted. Card cannot be used at any ATM or for cash access.
