President Signs Temporary Measure Extending ARRA COBRA Subsidy

With the “Jobs” bill currently stalled in the Senate, on March 2, the President signed into law a temporary measure extending critical programs such as unemployment insurance and the COBRA subsidy afforded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (or ARRA).

With respect to the COBRA subsidy, “The Temporary Extension Act of 2010″ specifically provides:

  • an emergency extension of the COBRA premium through March 31, 2010 and
  • an expansion of the COBRA subsidy to individuals whose hours were reduced prior to being laid off

A full copy of the bill is available for download on the WageWorks® Compliance Center.
Congress is currently working on a “Jobs” bill that if passed would most likely extend the COBRA subsidy until the end of the year. WageWorks will continue to update you on COBRA developments as they occur.
