Houston Area

Metro Q Card

made easy}

General Information

The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (often referred to as METRO) is a public transportation agency based in Houston, Texas, United States. It operates bus, light rail and bus rapid transit in the city as well as most of Harris County. METRO also operates bus service to two cities in Fort Bend County.

The METRO Q Card is a contactless smart card used to ride on public transportation in Greater Houston. The card can be used on METRO Bus and METRORail.

  • You must “tap” your card to load the funds each month or your card will be placed into “inactive” status.  This will prevent future orders from loading.  If WageWorks attempts to load a card that is in “inactive” status, it will fail.  If this happens, we will credit the election and cancel future orders.
  • All NEW Q-Cards must be issued by WageWorks. Once a participant has already been issued a Q-Card from WageWorks, they may re-elect or change their election by selecting the “transfer” product in the WageWorks commuter election online catalog.
  • The Q-Card can store up to $1,000 worth of funds; $500 worth of WageWorks-loaded funds and $500 worth of personal funds. If your WageWorks order causes your card to go over the $500 maximum, the order will be rejected, your WageWorks account credited and future orders cancelled.
  • If a Q-Card is lost, stolen or damaged, please call the WageWorks customer service department at (877)924-3967.  WageWorks will initiate the replacement process.
  • We guarantee the election will be loaded and available prior to the 1st of the benefit month.  However, we generally place the order around the 20th of the prior month (October 20th for the November benefit month for example).
  • A participant may fund their own Q-Card using the WageWorks Mastercard® Prepaid Commuter Card or WageWorks Visa® Prepaid Commuter Card.
  • The WageWorks Commuter Card can also be used in conjunction with the Houston Metro mobile application.

The WageWorks Commuter Prepaid MasterCard is issued by The Bancorp Bank, member FDIC, pursuant to license by MasterCard International Incorporated. Card can be used at qualified locations everywhere Debit MasterCard is accepted. Card cannot be used cash access or at ATMs.
