General Information

MetroCard®, the MTA's automated fare collection medium, is accepted on all New York City Transit subways and buses. It can also be used on MTA Bus, Nassau Inter-county Express (NICE) bus, and on the PATH system (operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey), a subway linking New York and New Jersey.

• MetroCards have an 18 month expiration date. The 30 Day and 7 Day passes are good for the designated time from first tap. 
• Defective MetroCards can be returned to the MTA by using an envelope provided in the station.  They will determine the value left on the card and send a new card with that balance on it.
• There are no split payments.  If there are not enough funds on your WageWorks Visa® Prepaid Commuter Card or a WageWorks MasterCard® Prepaid Commuter Card  to cover the full cost of the pass, please purchase a lower priced product.
• There are no refunds for unwanted MetroCards.  If you find you will not need your untapped MetroCard for the next month, hold on to it and tap it when you need it.  MetroCards are good for up to 18 months.

MetroCard Balance Protection Program

• Your 30-Day Unlimited or 7-Day Express Bus Plus MetroCard, purchased from a vending machine with a credit, debit, or ATM card is automatically protected against loss or theft by the MTA.  For more information, click here
   

The WageWorks Commuter Prepaid MasterCard is issued by The Bancorp Bank, member FDIC, pursuant to license by MasterCard International Incorporated. Card can be used at qualified locations everywhere Debit MasterCard is accepted. Card cannot be used cash access or at ATMs.

The WageWorks Visa Prepaid Commuter Card is issued by The Bancorp Bank, member FDIC, pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. Inc. Card can be used at qualified locations wherever Visa debit cards are accepted. Card cannot be used at any ATM or for cash access. 

Order Timeline

The timeline of events is as follows:

1. You can log into your account at WageWorks. Select “Enroll in Commuter” then select “Transit." Finally select “MetroCard” as the service provider.

2. If you’ve selected a WageWorks Visa® Prepaid Commuter Card or a WageWorks MasterCard® Prepaid Commuter Card, your funds will load to your card by the 20th of the month.

3. Once your WageWorks Visa® Prepaid Commuter Card or a WageWorks MasterCard® Prepaid Commuter Card has loaded you can purchase your MetroCard at a Ticket Vending Machine at any time.

4. If you’ve ordered a MetroCard to be sent to you by WageWorks, you will receive it before the 1st of the benefit month.
